Creating in a Time of Isolation - Bec Hopkins

Another artist, Bec Hopkins at Online Venue 143 has been in touch to let us know how she is faring during this strangest of times.

... Life has taken a bit of change of course for us all! I loved being a part of the Art Trail the last couple of years, and will really miss it this year, but look forward to 2021 and how much we will all appreciate it!

How is your creativity of benefit during this time of self isolation?

Bec Hopkins

As a mother of two young children I now find myself self-isolating while home schooling, which is all consuming, challenging, exhausting and wonderful. I find I no longer have the time to continue with my own painting but we are spending all of our days drawing, collaging, painting and sculpting together as a family and it is lovely to have their company. It’s amazing how much their enthusiasm increases when they get to use my special canvases and paints! I am running a weekly online art class for my nephews and nieces which is hilarious and noisy. My brain is brimming with plans and ideas for my own practice which will happen when this new normal starts to feel normal.

Why does your medium of choice fulfil your need or desire to be creative?

Bec Hopkins

A few years ago I decided to experiment with gold leaf in my paintings; I haven’t looked back and gold leaf features in almost all of my paintings now. I am very experimental and like to play with different methods and mediums but I love the effect of the gold leaf, especially as it compliments my favourite tones of blue so beautifully. It is maddening but always worth the frustrating moments and magic can be found in the mess.

What is your most loved tool or piece of machinery, and why?

Bec Hopkins

My favourite tool is my first ever palette knife which I bought as an art student in Brighton. The handle is caked in years of layers of paint. It’s hard to describe what is so special about it but it is always my go to knife and it is now irreplaceable.

What are you working on at the moment?

Bec Hopkins

I had spent the last few months building up quite a collection of paintings for the Art Trail which I was really looking forward to sharing with visitors. As I am currently not painting anything new, I have decided to run a raffle on my social media pages to win a painting of the winner’s choice with all proceeds going to NHS charities.
