Stoneware ceramics, both hand built and thrown pieces.
I work exclusively in stoneware and typically hand build my work from textured slabs. I like the tension generated between alternating naturalistic and man-made emblems and my pieces often feature a fish motif or repeating pattern. The slab built process lends itself especially well to garden lanterns, bonsai pots, boxes and ornamental jugs. I also experiment with techniques such as sculpture and slip cast forms derived from my own CAD designs. Recent sculptures have included caricatures of various prominent politicians and some of these pieces have an interactive element to them. During lockdown I have developed a range of Tiki mugs which are Polynesian inspired cocktail drinking vessels a modern take on the Toby Jug ! The techniques of CAD and 3D printing are used to create many of the texture rollers and stamps used in my slab-based work. Celadon and other breaking glazes are used to accentuate the decorative elements of the forms.
