Personal Statement

I am a part time printmaker participating for the second time in the 2023 Chichester Art Trail. My printing preference is Linocut, i enjoy the challenge the carve brings. Working out how the layers are going to evolve into a singular complete piece of work that may not wholly reflect reality but may evoke an emotion by the viewer.
I mainly produce reduction Linocuts which means that I use a single piece of Lino to create my completed image, the Lino is then reduced or carved away little by little with each consecutive layer. This means that once an edition is completed, no more prints can be made.
My inspiration generally comes from my surroundings. I am lucky to live on the edge of Chichester Harbour, so a lot of my work reflects the wildlife and the drama of landscape which lends itself to Lino very well. I also have a love of all crumbly and rusty things as well as taking inspiration from other printmakers both present and past.
I started printmaking at art college in the late 1980s, however due to life getting in the way it stopped me from continuing. About seven years ago I went on a weekend course at Handprinted in Bognor with a fantastic tutor who re-ignited my passion once again.
