Personal Statement

Thomas Bain Ceramics @ the Boathouse Pottery I make ceramics that celebrate form and embrace the craft of transforming raw materials into beautiful and useful objects. My work is both functional and sculptural, wheel thrown, sometimes altered at the leather hard stage. I have a particular interest in Raku ware I have developed a light weight, portable Kiln. I particularly enjoy the drama of the firing process, the subsequent reduction in flammable materials and quenching in water to finish. My most recent work is in Stoneware, fired in a reduction atmosphere using a gas kiln which produces copper reds and deep rich Celadons. I work in porcelain and stoneware clays and fire to a mid/high range with good reduction. The richness, depth and colour of the glaze enhancing the wheel thrown forms. I studied ceramics at Loughborough College of Art and I am a qualified teacher. I can offer individual and group classes as well as 'Raku' firing days.
